In her second book of poems for young people, Shauna Darling Robertson takes an in-depth look at mental health and wellbeing. Shauna says, “Young people’s mental health has never been so high on the public agenda and rightly so. In the past three years, the likelihood of young people having a mental health problem has increased by 50%.”
Just like our physical health, our mental health can fluctuate over the course of our lives, or even from day to day. The poems in this collection explore a variety of topics, from diagnosed mental health conditions to the everyday personal challenges faced by young people. The poems are variously thought-provoking, reassuring, heartbreaking, galvanizing, funny and hopeful, reflecting a diversity of perspectives, experiences and voices.
I’m grateful to have received funding from Arts Council England‘s ‘Developing Your Creative Practice’ programme to support work on the book.
If you’re an organisation working with young people to support their mental and emotional wellbeing, I’d love to hear from you. I’m interested in looking at how the poems in the book might help support conversations and explorations, and in developing a selection of media and resources to accompany the book. I’m also very open to receiving feedback on draft work-in-progress, particularly from young people. Please drop me a line if you’re up for a chat.
