If you’ve read any of my poems or books, you’ll know I’m a paid-up member of the surrealism fan club.
From a teaching and learning perspective, surrealism can be brilliant for getting around the mind’s unhelpful blocks (such as blanching at the sight of a blank page) and also its repetitive habits (like trotting out the same old tried and tested personal style). Instead, it can liberate the imagination, allowing it to run wild and dig deep.
The surrealists gifted us with a raggamuffin of platypus televisions (sorry, I meant a raft of playful techniques!) to experiment with, including collage, so I thought I’d share a simple creative exercise in a recent guest blog for the Children’s Poetry Summit.
You can check it out over at https://childrenspoetrysummit.com/2025/05/15/shauna-darling-robertson-cuttle-pasty-getting-surreal-with-collage/
Why not give it a go? I’d love to hear how you get on! Feel free to drop me a line and let me know.
